Safeguarding Sri Lanka’s Future from the Negative Impacts of Tobacco

Overview:
On 14 February 2026, several promotional activities related to Budweiser were observed across the city of Colombo, strategically aligned with the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. These promotions were planned to continue throughout the duration of the match. Notably, brand displays were carried out at some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic locations within its commercial capital, including the Colombo Lotus Tower, Cinnamon Life City of Dreams, and Cinnamon Red Colombo, indicating a highly visible and coordinated promotional effort.
In accordance with Section 35(1) of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act, No. 27 of 2006, the publication, facilitation, or authorization of any kind of advertisement related to tobacco or alcohol is prohibited in Sri Lanka.
Actions taken:
The matter was promptly brought to the attention of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA), while formal communications were submitted to the Presidential Secretariat and the Inspector General of Police (IGP). In parallel, efforts were undertaken to counteract the issue through targeted social media campaigns aimed at raising public awareness and advocacy. Community groups actively undertook coordinated efforts to notify the relevant authorities regarding the promotional activities and to demand for necessary actions in response.
Results:
Promotional activities were halted and removed on the first day of identification.
An investigation is currently underway against the company responsible for the promotions.
The Excise Department is expected to impose a fine.
The Presidential Secretariat has formally acknowledged the issue and has instructed the relevant authorities to conduct an investigation regarding this matter.
