On September 5th, 2023, the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) hosted a significant research launch event at the Kingsbury Hotel. The event saw an impressive attendance of 109 invitees, including higher government officials, CSO representatives, department heads, academics, professionals, and youth representatives. Additionally, 27 media persons from various media institutes participated, ensuring widespread media coverage.
The event commenced with registration, setting the stage for an engaging and insightful session. The welcome speech was delivered by Mr. Pubudu Sumanasekara, RESET country leader, followed by a keynote address from Dr. Palitha Abeykoon, Chairman of ADIC Sri Lanka. Kristina Sperkova, the International President of Movendi International, delivered a compelling guest speech, emphasizing the global perspective on alcohol issues.
A series of presentations provided a deep dive into various aspects of alcohol policy and taxation in Sri Lanka. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) presented the Alcohol Investment Case Study – Sri Lanka, highlighting the economic and social implications of alcohol consumption. Movendi International followed with a presentation on the Desk Study on Alcohol Taxation: Sri Lanka, offering insights into the effectiveness of taxation as a policy tool. ADIC then presented the RESET opinion poll results, which were further summarized by Vital Strategies, showcasing public opinion on alcohol issues. The Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) concluded the presentations by sharing the Key Findings of RESET Research.
Following each presentation, time was allocated for discussions, allowing participants and journalists to ask questions and comment on the research findings. This interactive segment provided a platform for diverse perspectives and fostered a rich dialogue on alcohol policy in Sri Lanka.
During the event, ADIC released a press brief to all media outlets with the highlighted heading: “The Opinion of the Citizens of Sri Lanka Regarding Alcohol Issues, Taxation, and Pricing Policies; An Insight into the Importance of Alcohol Taxation as a Crucial Alcohol Policy Measurement.” The press release included detailed information on the opinion poll results, methodology, and other relevant insights.
This event marks a significant step in understanding and addressing alcohol-related issues in Sri Lanka. By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders, the event underscored the importance of informed policy-making and community engagement in tackling these critical issues.
